My Brilliant Friend

My Brilliant Friend, Elena Ferrante

This one is truly a can't miss, IMHO. If you haven't read it yet, do so immediately and then pass it on to your BFF (obviously). In the first book of the four-part Neapolitan Novels, Ferrante introduces readers to a poor, post-war Italian neighborhood rife with friendship, romance and political unrest. The beautiful prose had me narrating my life and the honesty of this timeless tale will strike you straight through to the bitter end.

All four are worth the read and are sure to leave you missing your new Neapolitan family when it's over.  Luckily you can catch this coming-of-age story on HBO's small screen if you just can't get enough.
